About

Tiro Typeworks was founded in 1994 by John Hudson and Ross Mills, and soon established a reputation for both design quality and technical expertise in digital font production. Intentionally remaining a small company consisting of the founders, a single employee, and a carefullly selected team of external designers and advisors, Tiro Typeworks developed into a highly regarded developer of custom typefaces and font solutions for major software developers, academic organisations and publishers, and government.

Tiro Typeworks specialises in fonts for multilingual computing and publishing, and has developed fonts for many writing systems and specialised text requirements. To date, Tiro Typeworks has produced new typefaces for Arabic, Bangla (Bengali), Burmese, Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, Cherokee, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Geʽez (Ethiopic), Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Kannada, Latin (including IPA and other extended notation systems), Malayalam, Odia, Ohgam, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, and Thai, as well as technical and symbol fonts for CAD software, stock ticker software, terminal emulators, and fonts for mathematical and scientific and academic typesetting.

Tiro’s client list includes Adobe Systems, the Anandabazar Patrika media group, Apple Computer, Brill Academic Publishing, Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University Press, Linotype Library, Microsoft Corporation, the Government and Language Commission of Nunavut, the Society of Biblical Literature, and numerous smaller software companies, publishers and design agencies. Many of the typefaces designed by Tiro Typeworks have been recognised in international competitions, including Judge’s Choice selection in Type Directors Club competitions.
